I like to talk about the career path the students have chosen and how learning skills and gaining knowledge in their chosen field will help them in the future. I talk about the experiences and opportunities I have had and try to help them envision themselves being there also.
I also demonstrate the tasks that I want then to complete so it's very visual as well as explaining the important points and steps of what I am doing.
We discuss what we will be doing as final projects and inviting their families to see what they have accomplished. I want them to envision themselves at the end of the program, proud and happy infront of their families and friends.
When I relate my real-word experiences to the information in the text, the students become more engaged & begin asking pertinent questions.
I like to allow students to share personal experience (when appropriate). By hearing fellow students experience and relating to it on a human level, it often provide emotional by in not only for the student sharing the story, but it can improve group dynamics as well as motivate students to give good care to their clients.
Hi Roy,
Whenever we can make real life situations based on what we are teaching, students love it, and they tend to really buy into the course. Make concepts as practical as possible.
Patricia
I like to associate the class study to the students real life usage, how this information will apply into their vocational environment. I also, with their permission, correlate the information directly with the students existing situation, when they experience a real problem solution they get excited about a resolution as to their delimma. Then other students begin to share their issues experiencing the practicial application of the study.
Hi Ryan,
Excellent! You provide what a lot of our students need that one-on-one assistance. Keep up the good work! I am sure your students appreciate you.
Personally I find breaking the course day up into different hours, with diverse objectives for each, helps keep the students involved. This also can leave a tutoring portion of the class to help student having trouble. I incorporate 1on1 and student tutoring.
I show them how much I love the topic and love teaching. Most of my students will feed off my energy.
Hands on activities are always a way to get students excited as well as getting them interacting with the rest of the class. I like to introduce some equipment as well so it gets them eager to learn more about it.
Hi Tammara,
Whenever students understand that they can benefit from the course either personally and/or professionally they generate a sense of excitement.
Patricia
Hi Carlos,
Sometimes it is necessary to change your teaching style because each class is different because each student is different.
Patricai
Try to find out what peaks your classes interest. In order to reach any student you need to find something that they can relate to. Then use this to help in educating them. This may mean that you have to constantly change your teaching style, but if it helps each student to learn then it would be well worth the effort.
Have found using some outrageous examples, that could really never happen, BUT, prove my point or keep their attention long enough to get the point has worked.
Students learn best when incentives for learning in a classroom satisfy their own motives for enrolling in the course. I design assignments, in-class activities, and discussion questions to address these kinds of needs. Most students learn by doing, making, writing, designing, creating, solving. I give them examples on first day of class how to accomplish this. I also encourage students to focus on their continued improvement and knowledge base, not just on their grade on any one test or assignment.
Hi Hilary,
The more real you can make the course as to how it applies to the workplace, the more excitement you will generate from students.
Patricia
Hi Marie,
Students tend to enjoy the course more whenever real life is brought into the course.
Patricia
I find that the more you add personal experience (about the topic of discussion) the more real it makes the course for the students.
Giving them examples of how this course can be applied to the real world.
I try to incorporate real work situations and hopefully incorporate some humor into explaining those situations and how they were handled in the workplace to get students interested and excited about situations they might encounter in the workplace.
Hi Jennifer,
I concur! Real life examples/experiences are certainly more meaningful to students than book theory.
