Mentoring Students
I have found that often, students need to be mentored and encouraged. I have done this as a trainer in corporate America as well as here at CEC. The value of encouragement can mean the diference between success and failure.
I agree many of these students have parents that both work and they are alone. Many do not have anyone to guide them and to encourage them on. Words of encouragement, guidance and recogition many times will motivate them to try harder and improve thus being productive and feeling good about themselves.
Hi Amy,
I concur! We are in the business to change lives for the better and to impact one life is to change a nation.

I also couldn't agree more. So many times we run into students who have never had anyone else in their life to give them support (whether it's school or some other on-going issue). I can't even imagine how many lives we all have changed simply by doing what we do best! If at the end of the end I can walk out of the classroom and know I made a difference in just one person, I did my job. I know I can come back the next day and reach out to more!
This is most special to me when the one who comes back the next day is the one who wanted to quit...
Rodney, I am in total agreeement. In our culture the only time people hear anything is when they "mess up." A few honest, kind and specific words of praise and support go along way in school and in corporate America. People want to be recognized and encouraged. I have found that even a simple note makes a significant difference in attitude and willingness to try even harder. I seldom have issues in class because I truly seek the positive with every student---even if it starts with recognition that a habitually late student arrives on time for the first time ever. Once that happens, I notice that all of the students tend to be on time and ready to learn. Such a simple thing to make a world of difference.
