Setting the stage for success
I believe that when you introduce something new to your students, you need to make sure they understand it. I do this by showing the students examples and working through group assignment, where each student is working through a problem. Once you break it down, have them show you that they are understand the assignment, they will be successful in working them individually.

Hi Kelly and Thomas, I agree with both of you as I try and do both. I also make sure that when they do well in something that I let them know that they did. I have found that a little praise can go along way in helping a shy student gain confidence in themselvs
Hi Kelly, I agree with your assesment, showing real world examples and working in groups is the best method I have used so far, working in groups is a great learning experience, you can see who the leaders are and the followers(both are needed in the workplace>)
