one more chance to turn in "late assignment" : late late assignment
I set a class policy including "late assignment" rule. I accept late assignment by the following class of assignment due with 10% deduction of point. But there are a few students who miss assignment often and just skip to turn in. I give them one more chance to submit the missing assignment by the last class of the term to get at least "pass grade". In this case, I talk to the students individually because I do not want my student to fail the class.
Hi Virginia,
We tell students that it is not a punishment, but they still look at the deduction as a punishment. I simply tell them to get their work in on time and they do not have to be concerned with losing points.

I also agree about deducting the 10% but I also explain to students that the 10% is not a punishment to the late student. It is a reward to students who turn work in on time and do not lose 10%.
Hi,
I agree, although it's hard to deduct points from students who are already in risk of failing; usually good students turn their assignments on time, so the problem is that you are making it harder on the bad students, however, some how they need to learn how to be serious...

Hi Christopher,
If you are going to accept late assignments, I think at the bare minimum students should be deducted 10 points. It is not fair for that student not to lose any points, when other students worked diligently to meet their deadline.

Good Afternoon JungYun,
Thank you for sharing your experience with late assignments. I also deduct 10% off off late assignments. While I want my students to be successful as well, they have to realize that by not adhering to the requirements of your course syllabus, they are not only doing a disservice to themselves, but, they are disrespecting their faculty member. We, as faculty members, have already given the students ample time to do their assignments. If the student has missed or turned in an assignment late I also talk with them to see what their circumstance is. The common circumstance is that they are too busy with work or family.
Warm Regards,
Chris
