Lazy Students
I have some students that are just plain lazy. They want everything handed to them. It seems the farther they get into the course they feel that we owe them what ever they need to get a good grade.
Hi Karen,
You may want to incorporate a grading system for signing in. I am sure this will minimize the issue. Sometimes you have to hit students where it hurts to get their attention.

I really like this approach. I have an issue with students forgetting to sign the attendance sheet and I remind them that on a job they won't get paid if they don't clock-in. I can incorporate some of your terms for attendance and assignments. Thanks!
During my presentation from day 1, I do touch on the topic regarding the students grading, and I do state that their grades in my class, will have to be earned, and regardless the personal issues that they have going on in the lives, it is not an excuse for them use, just to get by.
I've noticed a strong sense of entitlement mindset from my students. It's not only their right, but I get an attitude that a lot of them feel almost as if I "owe" them something beyond the education provided. "We're the ones paying for your paychecks." It helps to remind them that going to school on any level is a priviledge that isn't currently available to a large portion of the world and wasn't availiable to most of our elders.
I tell my students that my class, for now, is their "job." Grades are the equivalent of receiving a paycheck and get promoted. My "business" requires that work be submitted on time to meet "company goals. I then remind them throughout semester that, when assessing their grade, to as themselves if they are they furthering the goals of the "company."
When I set my classroom expectations, I always include that the student will receive the grade they deserve, which is stated within the syllabi. They have to prove to me they can apply their knowledge within the work force. If they fail at school, they will fail at their job and eventually fail themself.
