In the private career school sector my experience is that the syllabus is "locked" and is not a document to be changed. In this case, a handout from the instructor including tips "how to get the most out of this class" is a successful strategy. This type of document is best made available through an online source for 24/7 access.

Wow, this is extremely long for a syllabus. Syllabi can become way too long if you try to put EVERYTHING on them. We only include information that is required by our accrediting body and classroom rules, policies, and procedures. My institution's syllabii are 2-3 pages long.

I agree that the syllabi is a tool that aides the students in the education, however, I have found that sometimes they become too wordy and the students gets lost or if the students do read them then they get hung up on the verbiage. Where I work our Syllabi typically end up being 20+pages long for a 12 day unit.
I think the information I am learning in this class will help me to approach my dean about the importance of "catching the students' eye" without intimidating the students.

I completely agree that a good syllabus is crucial to managing a class. By reviewing the syllabus on the first day of class, the students are aware of the application of the course objectives to the real world, as well as expectations for late work, tardies and absenses, and what disciplinary action will be taken for anything that occurs that is against policy. Having the student sign that they have read and understand the syllabus is also important. The syllabus can be pulled out and referenced as often as needed throughout the course.
