Hi Monica,
I like the idea of having students help create the final. It lets them know that they have ownership.

Hi Yolanda,
Excellent job on keeping students engaged! I like to let my students know how the course will help them in their career to get student buy in.

Hi Erin,
Students like knowing how the book theory is going to be applicable to their career.

Hi Paul,
You have to help students see how the course will benefit them personally/professionally.

Hi Richard,
You are on point! Students need to know the benefit personally/professionally!

The students never know which in-class activity, game, or discussion will lead to further points. They are often engaged in activities and become competitive when they have figured out that the discussions can lead to points or them being able to submit a question for the 50 question final. Generally, by the end of the semester there are 10 questions on the final that have been submitted by their fellow classmates.

Hello...

I just try to build a instructor / students relationship with my students.

The first day of class, I do introductions. I asked students to share their name, where they are from, and to provide hobbies, sports, or anything activity they enjoy. I introduce, myself first, then go around the room. This eases my students.

I also included group projects assignments which makes them interact with other students.

When showing a powerpoint, I will stop on a slide to incorporate the class. I will get their feel on the topic. I will do this process through the entire powerpoint. It's amazing to see how involved the students get.

Best Regards,

Upon start of the course I go over the objectives and discuss how the lecture and lab work together. I also try to give the students examples of what they may see in their work that directly corresponds to what they will learn and be physically doing in lab. This usually gets them excited and ready to do the activities but also ensures that they focus on lecture so they can perform better in lab.

I tell my students that you never know where life my take you, they may not see the relevence now but, and then I give them examples in my life where a cource I took lead me.

I tell my students stories about my experiences out in the field tht pertain to them for when they graduate. I make the stories fun and interesting along with humor. Sometimes I ask them what they would have done in the same situation especially if the outcome was an embarrassing one for me. This allows them to problem solve for the both of us... It turns out to be a learning experience for the both of us and gets them involved and excited.

You need to get the students to see how the information being presented will benefit there career's and life goals. Soliciting feedback from them would help to see if they are getting it.

Hi Florence,
I love the analogy. I am sure your students appreciate your leadership and direction.

I ask them in previous classes what has helped them. I always lecture for about 40 minutes then take a break to allow for questions and recap. Thursdays are lab days where we will pick apart any homework question so that they understand it better. On they first day I explain that I am the captain of the ship but as passengers they can help decide which route we take to the final destination. IN the end for being a medical program they need to know the information, I am willing to help in anyway to make sure they understand and are able to apply the information.

The most common strategy used by me is practical application. Once a student sees how the application works in the big picture, they are very much into the learning of that particular skill set. I also use my experiance in the field (over 30 years)to help teach and get their attention. making the transitation from SME to IDE will take some work, but it is so needed to get everything I need to get across to my students.

I try to explain many of the benefits that the course provides long term to students. Once I find out what their purpose for being in school is then I try to link the ways that the course can be a useful tool in attaining their goals. In addition, adding relevant, real-life experience is a great way to get students engaged and keep them motivated.

Hi Alan,
Wow, you are luck to have such flexibility in your program. You can really cater to your students.

Hi Doris,
Graduate speakers are priceless. Students make a great connection with graduate speakers.

As an automotive instructor, I can appeal to amny different areas and interests. As I learn each students interests, I can adapt parts of my lessons to appeal to each of them in a different way and also compare different applications to broaden their interests.

I use different ways to get the students to buy in to the class. One thing that I do is that I give them examples of situations that have happened, and then I ask them how they would have handled the situation. Another thing is that when graduated students come in, I have them speak to the class and have them available to ask/answer questions.

Hi Tom,
When relevancy is shared with students they understand WHY they are taking the course and how the course will benefit them.
