Arriving Late to Class
As a part time instructor I am in a clinic setting. Should students get marked down if they arrive late to clinic?
Hi Christopher,
Students definitely should be penalized for tardiness. In the workplace tardiness is unacceptable.

As an instructor with a fluid sense of time myself, even I have a limit to tardiness. Nothing is more annoying that having a student roll into class 35 minutes late without a word. Dock points? Absolutely.
Hi Christopher,
Students need to be reprimanded if they are late because in the real world not being punctual is totally unacceptable.

As a lab instructor at a technology college, I stress the importance of punctuality. It is very important for the student to see the correlation to workplace behavior. If a student is more than 15 minutes late, it results in a 3 day ban of labs.
Hi Corina,
Students need to know that tardiness will not be acceptable in the workplace.

Hi Tami,
We have to do something to get these students attention. I dock my students as well.

Yes, they need to know there are consequences for this behavior. The sooner the better to prevent continued behavior and prepare for the real world.
Kristen I too dock the students when they arrive late. I also teach in a clinic environment and found students "sneeking" in. Now I lock the clinic door so they have to knock to be granted access, which also calls to everyone's attention their tardiness.

Hi Susan,
This is a good way to point out the importance of punctuality.

Hi Kesia,
Students typically will take those same behavior they have at school into the workforce. She will probably get in trouble at her site for not being punctual.

I also teach in a clinical setting. I have the students discuss the impact of timeliness in the real world. What happens with communication between shifts when the on-coming shift is late? How does it effect patient care? The group was able to discuss the topic and were effectively discuss the resoning for being timely.
I too have student that always arrives late to class. I have now incorporated a computer time clock and students have to punch in. She has improved, but still runs late. This is very frustrating, and I do not feel that I am going to be able to trust her at a clinical site.
Hi Amy,
It certainly is a distraction to the entire class when a student arrives late. Students must be taught the importance of punctuality.

Hi Sarah,
Great practice to follow, and students should definitely be held accountable if they are late and reprimanded accordingly.

Hi Andrea,
Yes, set the standards high and make students rise to them.

I too work in a setting that keeps track of hours. I dock my students time when they are late. It's distracting to class when someone walks in late & has to settle in. Then they generally start asking things that were covered at the start of class. I inform them that we can talk after class & then use that time to also discover the reasons behind the tardiness & if there is anything I can do to prevent future occurrences.
If students are late to clinic, I write down their names & arrival times in a spiral that I keep in the clinic area. They are held accountable to arriving late to clinic. I also write down what time their patients arrive just in case they are late. That way, I know exactly how much time each student had with their patients.
I am a clinic instructor, also. I dock them time when they are 1 minute late. Only because I stress the importance of their clinic hours, and also they need to know in the working world, this is not acceptable. I have 2 students that push the limit ALL the time, so yes, I dock them.
