What if a student misses the day of a test?

I feel that if a student calls the day of the test and lets the instructor know why they are missing the test, then I give them till the next class period, but if they do not call or give any explaination, then they receive a 0

Hi Patricia,
While I understand you may not like parts of the policy and other parts you do like, at least your institution is consistent, which is fair to all students. Students like it when things are fair and consistent.

We have the same policy, I like it. It works great to get the items made up quickly and to get the missed work off your "to do" list.

Our policy is , the student may make up the test or missed work with a "justifiable" reason for absence. This is a bit subjective which I don't like & then instructors differ. A part I do like in our policy is - the student must initiate making up work by discussing with instructor and the makeup work cannot recieve a grade of greater than an 80%.

Hi Christina,
I love it! This is the same policy my institution has adopted. It really decreases the number of absences.

We have a policy that if a student misses an announced test/quiz it is their responsibility to approach the instructor on the first day back to class in order to schedule a make up. If the student does not make arrangements with the instructor on the day they return to school, then the instructor does not have to allow the student to take the test/quiz.

Following our school policy, if a student is absent on the day of a Quiz, he/she will receive a zero.

Hi James,
At my institution we have a policy that if a student takes a test late, the student will lose 10 points on Day 1, for Days 2, 3, and 4, the student will lose an additional 5 points each day. After the 4th Day the student will get a 0. By having a policy you do not have to get in to good reasons and bad reasons to judge as to whether the student should take the test or not.

If my student has a good reason why he missed test day, I would allow him to make up the test after class on his own time.

Hi Paige,
We have an institution policy about taking test late, and it is strictly enforced. The first day the student loses 10 points, the second, third, and fourth day, the student loses an additional 5 points each day. After the fourth day, the student receives a 0.

Hi Donna,
You are right! Enforce the policy with all students. The minute you make an exception, you lose credibility.

The syllabus for my class states clearly what the policy for missed exams is and I find the best course of action is to stick with the stated policy for everyone, no exceptions.
