Rationale for Learning
One of the biggest challenges for teaching math to students is getting them to see that it does have a purpose! Once you give them specific examples of where it can be seen/used in real life, they are more apt to actually want to learn it. I try to start lessons out by getting them engaged this way.

Some students just don't get it. Some don't care to and there are some who do not have the ability to. We have to work hard to do our very best to reach as many as we can. A simple question as such should be able to be answered by any college student.

I think it was a math or physics class for a trade school curriculum. I asked an arbitrary question about how many inches are in a foot as a lead in to some related topics. I was astounded when the student I asked couldn't tell me. I asked quizzically how is it they didn't know. The student responded "I don't need to know that kind of stuff."
The entire time I had the student I tried to convey the relevance of what I was teaching. giving real world examples, lab projects, personal stories. Sadly I don't think the student every really got it.

Visual aids certainly provide better clarity. Students get a better understanding when they can see it!

I have found that teaching students Anatomy and Physiology is to make the importance of knowing the Anatomical locations of each system and their relivance in their daily life and its importance in healthy body function(s). The importance of visual aids adds to a better undersanding of Anatomy This gets their attention and engagement into the subject matter.
I'm lucky that my course is relevant to special patient issues encountered in dental hygiene. I think that, with examples from clinical practice, my students will find the course content relevant.

When students understand the relevance of a course they are more excited and interested in learning the course. The students need to know the relevance of the course.
