It is very important to let the students know the due date of homework
I’m guilty of the Old Fashion calendar. I actually take the class syllabus and create a “due-date calendar†for the students and hand this out, in addition to the syllabus, on the first night of class.

Advance notice for our type of students is key. Some of our students deal with a very dysfunctional personal life, and we need to give them plenty of notice. Students must understand in the real world excuses are not going to be readily accepted.

There are many factors (weather, traffic, working students etc.) that factor into delays in turning in homework and completing assignments. Having dates set helps keep things on track, and accommodations can be made as the situations warrant.
I agree totally, but I in my case, the students don't all have access to a computer with a printer. I teach pipefitting at Tulsa welding school.

I tell the students to print a free calendar from Word and put their due dates on the calendar. Students have to learn how to do and be held accountable. It is not good for us to do everything for students; they must take responsibility.

Do you think by printing up a calendar from Word with all the due dates already printed on it, would be a good idea? Or by taking away part of the responsibility from the student, would hurt them in the long run?

Yes it is. It is good for students to have a calendar so that they can see exactly when assignments are due. A lot of students will use the calendar on the smartphones, but I still see a lot of students using the old-fashioned calendars.
