Reflecting After Class
As I went through the first part of this class, one of the things that stuck out to me was the discussion on reflecting after class. One person said he made notes immediately after on what worked and what didn't, and then adjusted for the next class and did the same thing again. Another said to take 20 minutes after the class and ask yourself questions: What worked? What didn't? What was asked that I wasn't prepared for? What didn't get asked that I was sure would? I think those questions can provide a lot of really good insight, especially for first time teachers. Does anyone else have any questions or suggestions/techniques they may use after a class to reflect and build upon?
Hi Kim,
As an educator, I do not care how good we are, we can become better. I am still working at perfecting teaching after doing it for 25+ years.

I agree, I think if you reflect on the class and how well the instruction flowed or didn't, then you can make the necessary adjustments for the next class and refine your instructing.
Hi Holly,
Great way to get feedback. Just make sure to maintain control in this type of environment. Do not allowe other personnel to be bashed during the discussion.

Some time ago, I started gathering my students in a round-table forum about 15 minutes before the end of class to have an open discussion of the positive/negative aspects of the day. The students start to look forward to these discussions, and I get to better understand the production from their points of view. They also very much enjoy giving feedback on the instructor, but overall this technique helps me better access their needs.
Hi Rick,
Awesome! I can tell you want to be the best that you can possibly be. I love how you mention your positive as well as wanting to get even better. You have the right attitude to be one of the best instructors ever.

My school surveys the students about the classes and I received very positive ratings and remarks on my first assessment. It is great to hear I am well regarded as an instructor but I am going to try to get more metrics from the school which will help me determine the negatives of my class and work to strengthen them. Hopefully they will have the ability to help me in this regard.
Hi Angelica,
Reflecting after each class works. Reflecting will make you a better instructor, thus producing a better student.

I have never heard of this, I will be sure to check it out. Thanks.
Hi Jeanne,
Survey Monkey is a great tool for gathering data. It is is impressive to know the length you to go to ensure you are giving your students what they need and some of what they want.

This also stood out for me. I am typically very reflective of what worked and what didn't work as well as I thought after the session. I had not thought about "why" it was different than I expected. The technique I use is to poll the students and find out what they would suggest I do differently next time. My practice is to ask open ended questions, and also use Survey Monkey so they know their feedback is confidential.
