The most challenging students for me are the ones right out of high school. While I agree that part of the challenge is the lack of focus and immaturity, I also find their overall lack of life experience can limit the effectiveness of some “real world” examples.

I find engaging the students and learning a little about their experience can help me employ examples to which they can more easily relate.

The most challanging student is the one who thinks he is above the other students in class.Knows evwerything and can out perform them.I deal with them by challanging there knowledge with assigning them with multiple tasks. this usually brings them back down to earth and they leave the the class with a better understanding of how to work as a team instead of an individual

Hello Anthony,
I like how you allow each set of students to play off their strengths to the opposite set. Great work!
Patricia

I agree that students right out of high school are a little harder to deal with, but in our school setting there is a great mix of ages. I ask older ones to help with maturity issues and in return, the younger ones help the older with study techniques and technology issues. It works out well. It shows them a true sense of the industry and the mix they will encounter. Helps build teamwork and respect for each other’s age differences.

Hello Gary,
You are working on some very important traits with your students. I am sure in years to come they will remember the impact Mr. Bryant made in their lives. Continue to make a difference.

Hi Jose,
I was 23 years old when I first started teaching on this level. I understand the challenges you face with older students. My students quickly realize even though I was young, but I had the knowledge to help change their lives for the better. I always displayed the highest level of professionalism, and my great reputation preceded itself. She is "young", but she knows her stuff! I am sure you know your "stuff."

Hello Sabrina,
At my institution we have adopted a professional service that has experts to deal with any kind of challenges a student may have, such as pyschiatrists, psychologists, financial counselors, substance abuse counselors, etc. The service has been very beneficial to our institution, but most importantly to the students. We found the service through United Way. Gernerally, there is a United Way in every city. Look into this.

Hi Joshula,
How effective has this tactic been for you, and how have your students reacted to the tactic. I am thinking this works great.
Patricia

Hi Donald,
It sounds like you do not tolerate foolishness, and I don't blame you! You must be in control of your class, otherwise your students will control you. Continue to maintain a conducive learning environment in your classroom.
Patricia

I find that the younger the student, the more of a challenge they present. While the older, more non-traditional students have grasped the value of an education which they are paying for, the younger ones still need to make the correlation. fortunately, I have them for two (2) classes several months apart. In the first class I try to establish the necessity of disciplined study, timeliness, and dependability. In the second, I concentrate more on critical thinking, an area that seems to be missing from the "high school" grads and teamwork.

I beleive that my most challenging students are older people, specially when they think that I am to young to teach them. I don't challenge them, I listen to their concerns and as the class progreses they realize that I am well prepare to teach the class.

The harder most challenging students for me have been The Blaming others, students.
Some of the blames that I encounter latetly are really personal matters that was out of my control to handle, no even relevant to school but intervining in the students performance.
How can we suggest counseling without hurting more these students? I did encounter students that were looking for someone to do their jobs because life have been really bad to them! I did try to encourage them... but what I found each time was a victim of everything even of any help.
What is there to do with a Student that is in this path?

For "know it all students" I would use the tactic where the teacher asks that student to listen to the other students and write questions and comments and report at the end of the discussion what he thinks.

It varies at times who are the most challenging but I will agree that the high school students due cause the most disruption. I usually stop speaking and look at them to let them know that their behavior is not acceptable. Other ways are to ask them to share what they are talking about, I will also make a statement at this time and I will split them up. If all else fails I will send them out and ask them to return when they feel that they can contribute to the class.

Hello Brian,
I understand. I have students with different cultural backgrounds and dialects as well. You just have to do the best you can to communicate effectively. I deal with this type student one-on-one to make sure they understand different concepts, assignments, projects, etc.
Patricia

Hi Doreen,
Some students are just naturally afraid. After the student has performed a particular task, the student quickly discovers it really was not that bad. They gain the confidence they need after the performance.
Patricia

Hi David,
What an awesome way to handle your know-it-all sutdents. I like how the demonstration shows the difference between the good and great.
Patricia

Hello Gary,
Whom do you refer to as being recipe dependant students? The method you use to handle this type of student, does it normally work?
Patricia

My most challenging students are the individuals who have language barrier issues. In South Florida we have individuals from many cultural backgrounds and dialects. This often poses a problem when attempting to communicate effectively with them and conveying specific theories and pertinent information.

My most challenging students have been the ones who have been apprehensive with applying what I have taught them in my demonstrations. By having them demonstrate to me and getting positive feedback from me, they usually perform at high levels and overcome their fears.
