one on one

One on one chats with students is a great way to really get to know the students.

I do one on one's routinely and as a standard. I have found, this method provides an opprtunity for both the student and instructor to have open communications. It may require additional time, however the positive relationship benefits are worth it.

Hello Guy,
As stated, never subject yourself to danger! Get higher authority involved.
Patricia

This is a good thing sometimes. Right now I have an ANGRY student that has lost focus and has some issues. It has really made me focus on him, because the other students are complaining. This is an instance where a 1 on 1 is a scarey thing to where a witness is needed in case the situation gets ANGRY. But I love one on one - it shows the student I care and not just doing the job.

Hi Ted,
It sounds like you make yourself available to students. Students feel more at ease when they know you will help them.
Patricia

I like to use one on one time with students that are strugiling and seem disinterested in the subject. All my students known that i will help them before or after class but sometimes i need to be persistant to get them to spend more time.

I believe that one on one time time should be encouraged by asking students to write down their questions in a suggestion box and then posting the answers in reply as a "bulletin board". This way the anonymous nature of the discussion encourages students to get closer to the real objectives

Hi Harold,
Having a one-on-one conversation is like magic. The conversation generally goes well, and the student comes out feeling really rejuvanated.

I find talking one on one helps for all involved. Usually the student opens up with concerns or questions they felt the could not ask infront of their peers or might have questions about their career path and are asking for some course to follow.

Hello Rory,
I have found that one on one works miracles. A student feels very cared for whenever one on one can be provided. Students love all the attention!
Patricia

I do this with students to find out what there goals are. This also helps them to stay in the program. I do this just to let them speak. This also lets you see where they are.

Hi Gary,
I enjoy having chatting sessions with my students. It amazes me what you can learn from and about your students just from chatting. I equally enjoy chatting myself.
Patricia

I usually arrive to class a few minutes early and just have a casual chat with whoever is there. If i feel that our lab for the day is light, then I'll continue that chat for a few minutes after lecture begins so all students may get involved. For me, this works pretty well on the first day of a new group of students, or even after a particularly difficult and stressfull production the day before.

Hi Donald,
You're right, the larger the class, the harder it is to provide students with one-on-one assistance. Continue to do your very best to give individualized attention.
Patricia

I agree that is a good wy to get to know your students. It also get them to know you better. But it get really haed to do sometime when there is 30 student in the class.

One on one with students is a highly effective way to get student inside information Information that can help one formulate a strategy to cope with certain students.

I also like to talk with my students. They are most interesting in some of there thoughts, and thought processes. It sure helps round out the over all setting in the classroom being able to relate to them from thier own level.

Hi Stu,
Isn't that something when a student is able to answer his or her own question? This practice even amazes the student.
Patricia

You really get to know them, and alot of the times they pick my brain and I love it when they answer their own q's after they talk with me.

Hi Stu,
It is amazing what you learn from chatting with students. If time permits, I love spending the last 10 minutes of class with my students for a quick chat session. Students can tell you somethings.
