I like to try to get these students to see that they should accept responsibility for their own actions and not put their fingers at others.

We have to let our students know that we are on their side, and we are here to help them succeed.

I try to be understanding, then remind them that of the requirements and offer to help them plan how rto accomplish the goal.
I also remind the student that I am here to help if they need it. That way they do not feel like they are alone.
I tell students that an excuse (shifting blame to others) is just a noisy way of not wanting to do something. I remind students that if they truly want to do something, he or she will find a way. I remind and assist students in formulating a Plan B and Plan C to enable them.
