I agree that keeping all of your students involved with the lesson plan is a great way to keep their attention

by directing questions toward them for discussion every once in a while

If only one or two students are answering questions, I call out random names and ask questions. It just keeps everyone alert.

Ask them for their perspective/comments on the concept or issue that is being discussed.
