Students that leave the class early.

I try to have a daily quiz at the end of each class that covers the material that was recently discussed. This helps to assess the material that is freshest in student's minds and keeps them from leaving early. Some students even stay after class to finish up the mathematics. So now I need a perfect strategy to get them to class on time. Any suggestions? I'm currently trying to have team time at the beginning of class. Thanks for any comments.

I really like this idea. I know I cannot exempt them from a final at my school but I can possibly do something with their quizzes or homework. I was thinking about some other possibilities too.

Open book or take home test if all students have perfect attendance until the test.

No quiz if everyone attends class.

I really like the suggestion of having students sign out. I hate to waste class time on giving quizzes at the end of every class and if i wait to give a test at the end of class some students may feel rushed to finish.

I usually do the same at the beginning of the class. I give a short quiz about something from the prior class. This motivates them to try and get there on time. I also may give extra credit assignments at the beginning or end of class.

I think this is a great idea

Hi Daniel,
You get from students what you expect. Most students will rise to the expectations. I also like the idea of only allowing homework to be turned in within the 1st 15 minutes.

I have had great success with having a quiz at the beginning of class. It amazes me how students can show up on time when they know they could possibly receive a zero. I like the idea of taking up homework only in the 1st 15 minutes of class.

In our school, we're expected to record late arrival times and early outs of students. An accumulation of this lost time is a penalty on their Class Participation grade.

I really like this strategy of rewarding those students that have excelled and put in the extra effort and am eager to try this next semester. I currently treat leaving class early the same way I treat tardiness, anything over 5 minutes the student loses their participation (attendance) points for the day.

Having a quiz at the end of the class everyday is a great idea to try and have students stay until the very end. I may try that technique to see how effective it will be.

I give a quiz at the beginning of class - if the students is not seated they recieve a zero for the quiz. Quizzes account or 30% of the final grade. Our class is 4.5 hours long and generally lecture/discussions takes the whole time. On days when we finish early, I plan an fun exerice (relevant YouTube videoes, etc) or we complete the homework as a class assignment.

I like the idea of end of class quizzes. I think that it is the same concept as the start of class quiz. If we can keep the student engaged and ready for what is to come then we have succeeded in our daily goals...

Coming late and leaving early are problems in some of my classes. These behaviors are disruptive. Some great ideas have been offered that I will try. How about locking the door five minutes after the class starts--or requiring students to sign out at the end of the class period to get full credit for attendance?

Hello Julie,
You're right, students will stick around for exam review. They understand the importance of the review and are encouraged to stay.

We also have the tardy, leave early policy. I usually give quizzes at the beginning of class. They can not make up quizzes and will get a zero if not seated when the test is handed out. I usually review for upcomming exams at the end of class. This works to keep those tempted to leave early to stick around.

Hi Teague,
This is not a problem at my institution. You can do this based on academic freedom.

Hello Laquita,
Trying giving a quiz at the end to encourage them to stay. I also give a participation grade, if they are not there to participate they get a zero.

Hi Eric,
What a smart way to keep students in class. As a reward, I allow my students to leave after the test. Most deserve to leave after the test because I know they studied really hard.

I also give the tests right at the end of the day and I try to manipulate the class so if they leave early they won't know their score untill the next day while the students who stay the whole time see their scores.

I teach at night so students, even though they choolse this class time, frequently want to leave early. I try to adjust the material so it is important for them to remain in class.
