Class Management

You need Class Management if not the kids will walk all over you

I totally agree with the rule of laying down the rules on day 1 for Class Management. I was warned by a fellow instructor for day 1 class management rules. I did it and it work for the whole term.

I like to get all students engaged in an activity on day one, within the first ten minutes. Teams of two work for me, each team has something to do and report back to the entire class, we go around asking for feedback and discussion, kind of like popcorn going of. The students end the first day with a new student friend, activity, participation, and no negative feelings about the class. Day two we review some of the basic classroom norms and again, go around gathering opinions and feedback. By the end of the first two days, students feel ok to participate, they know the style of participation, and they are ready for assignments.

Hi Monte,
It is always important to share the why. Students are so much more receptive when they understand why.
Patricia

I find adult students respond to rules better when the reason of the rules are explained. They need to understand why or they won't listen.

Hi Laurie,
What type of class management do you conduct?
Patricia

Thank you! This sounds like very good advice!

Let the class know that you are serious, but not mean. Talk to them about your expectations and let them know that by following your rules, in turn you will be able to help them learn the materials they will need to know to continue their education on into their career.

I do agree that you have to follow through with whatever you say the consequences will be, if rules are not followed. If you do, then the students will take you seriously.

Hi Melanie,
Yes! Class management is a MUST! The environment should be one that is conducive to learning. Students really do want a controlled environment.
Patricia

class managment is crutial to a students learning enviorment. You must lay the laws on day 1 so the students can be in a successfull learning enviorment.

Melanie

Be fired up!! Get up, get exited and they will take notice. Be firm but caring. Tell them that no matter what students will stand out. Maybe for good things and maybe for bad things. It will be up to them which thing they get noticed for.

I agree Patricia. If you don't set your expectations before the class on Day 1, you cannot expect them to comply. My packet that I give on the 1st day has class rules including behavior and dress code requirements.

A new instructor would need to establish and maintain credibility. Demonstrate personal and educational integrity, interact with students professionally and sincerely, be receptive to students' comments and feedback, behave in accordance with the schools code of conduct, develop content familiarity, be honest and realistic about their expertise, speak supportively about their fellow instructors and school to the students, and last but not least...Accept students for just being students

Hi Cindy,
Make your rules known on Day 1 and what the consequences are. If rules are broken make sure to reprimand the student as stated on Day 1. Also, there is a need to be firm on Day 1 so that your students will know that you are serious. What do you do to manage your classes?
Patricia

What ways do you suggest for a new instructor to use to keep classes in control?

i do think that you always need to be in control of the class, even with difficult students
