Dealing with unruly students

Sometimes dealing with unruly or disruptive students can be very taxing and time consuming. I can usually tell after the first class who my disruptive students will be. It is often helpful to talk to these students ona one-on-one basis to try to come to some type of an understanding about these students and to try to find out why they are they are the way they are. It us often useful to give them small group projects to work on. I try to never let them take charge of a class and disrupt the class. I will pull them out and talk to them individually if need be.

Hi Van,
At what point do you remove the disruptive student from the classroom?
Patricia

I usually give them one chance-and even then I will try to break up the situation by walking into the classroom area they might be in. If after that time I will definitely ask them to speak to me privately. If after that it hasn't had enough of an effect I may ask a question to the entire class and then ask for a second response from the disruptive student.

It never fails. I seem to always have one in the bunch. I agree with taking care of it as soon as possible.

In this day and age we have way too many unruly kids in schools. I feel this due to no disciplin at home. I fell the best way to aproach the situation is to take the student aside and try to find seat of the problem. It could be home, school or you. You could have him/her make a list of problems. Addres the ones you can, possibly with help of the school counselor. If that does'nt help, pin a note on his/her shirt and send the little darlin home for further help.

I agree 100% nip this in the bud as soon as possible

Hi Steven,
Dealing with unruly students is definitely a challenge. These students should be spoken to immediately once this type of behavior is discovered. After the first meeting, if the disruptions continue to occur have the student removed from the class. It is not fair to the instructor nor the other students.
