Inattentive students
I've observed that if I "rope" inattentive students into a discussion on a regular basis I somehow force them to listen. Eventually, they become more participative.
I will casually make my way over to the inattentive student as I'm talking.I'll then try to engage them in the topic (in a non threatening manner).
This is a good idea. If they aren't listening, the potential embarassment caused by them not knowing the answer coud motivate them to become more engaged.
Hi Peter,
Great way to pull the student back into the lesson by calling their name. This is a sure way to get their attention; number 1 you stand beside them and number 2 you call their name.

I try to use these students in my examples in class. I will walk over and stand beside them and say "Now let's assume Mr. Jones....." and then go on with my example.
Hi Lina,
Great point! Inattentive students have to know that they are going to be called upon to stay attentive.
