Unfocused or Confused?
I just taught a class that I found myself constantly having to repeat everything I lectured about. Upon further investigation, I found that half the class had a language barrier, and a few others had learning disabilities. Even though the students are instructed to bring these challenges to the instructors attention, they often don't. It took several classes to get to the bottom of this, and in an excelerated program that is valuable time lost.
Hi Edward,
I have experienced the added possibility with several students. They tell me all the time, I am just so overwhelmed. I have way too much on my plate. This is when we get into a discussion/showing as to how to better manage their time. We have to let our students know everyone has a lot going on, but it is doable.

I will add a third possibility. Unfocused, confused, or are they overwhelmed? Many students have expectations that are way below the level required to perform aa a level that is acceptable. They are not prepared for the issue of "Time Management" that is mandatory to succeed in higher education.
I had a student student the last 2 terms that was always confused and seemed to always wanted to do things her way, ignoring what was done during my demonstration. So after a few weeks of constant 1 one 1 attention, I pulled her aside and ask her if there is something wrong...something I can help with. It turns out she has a severe learning disability that she did not disclosed because she was embarassed.
My biggest issues are: 1.How can I help if the student don't disclose these information & 2.How do I teach a student that is with severe learning disabilities...any classes that anyone can suggest?
That is so true in many classes. Instructors teach the way they learn. If you do not address all learning styles, the students are lost. Accelerated classes require a different type of instruction and a focused learner. Some students should not be in these types of courses.
