One on One session

It is very effective when you meet with the inattentive student to discuss the issues and an opportunity to know them better.

I feel that One on One sessions are tremendous in changing a students behavior. Everyone wants to feel like they matter and when you have a One on One session with a student, you are able to hear their point of view, as well as explain your point of view and the course requirements.

Hi Suzanne,
You have to feel each student out and if you feel getting another instructor involved is needed, then by all means get another instructor involved so that nothing is misunderstood.
Patricia

I agree. I do feel, however, there are some challenging students that would be easier to talk to with another faculty member present to avoid any conversation from being misconstrued

Hi Luis,
Anytime you counsel a student appropriate documentation should be placed in the student's file. We always need documentation to protect us...just in case.
Patricia

In answer to your question, yes. Whenever a one on one is conducted with a student there is a form that is filled out stating what was discussed, plan of action and a date set to have goals accomplished. Both myself and the student sign it. Thanks for your comments, however; I am not a new instructor. I have been passing my knowledge along for three wonderful years now.

Patricia,
As a new instructor when you meet with your students who are inattentive, did you keep notes, have them sign something to state they have been spoken to or anything like that. I ask because thinking of the workforce things are documented for a purpose. Do we/should we also document with students?

Hi Daniel,
Nothing beats one-on-one. It works wonders.
Patricia

Hi Patricia,
Students need to know that we geniunely care about them and their success.
Patricia

I agree with you. When you take the time to meet with an inattentive student on an individual basis that student has your undivided attention. When you show a student that you are concerned and that you care they tend to "open up" to you . This way you have a better understanding of what is going on in their lives and how to better help them to reach their goals.
