Blaming Others, bonus points
In the section on the "Blaming others" students, one of the strategies suggested deals with penalties for lateness. While I agree that there should be consequences for lateness, I disagree with the other suggestion of offering bonus points for turning in assignments early for students "who are in need of course points but can't seem to get things in on time." I am happy to work with a student to figure out what barriers they have to getting assignments in on time, but I don't believe that allowing them to "make up" points serves to reinforce the message that, in the business community, there aren't any "do overs".
Hi Marsha,
I concur! Seeing examples are very motivating.
Patricia
Usually late assignments are also badly done. I like to take the assignment and go over it with the student, showing them that with a little more effort, it could have been spectacular, and what that finished product will do for the student by being complete and well done. Most of the time, I think they are afraid they will do it incorrectly or don't know how to start. Showing them an example of good work or helping them get started usually reduces the repetion of late or not done at all.
Hi Daniel,
In many fields there are no do-overs, namely medical as well. You must be on point.
Patricia
You're right about do-overs. In the electrical field there wont be any do-overs after you incorrectly energize a $100,000 piece of equipment, or worse, fail to test a circuit for voltage before working on it. The message needs to be stressed.
Hi Virginia,
I solely agree! In the real world, do overs will cause you to lose your job. We must be real with our students because in the real world employers do not play.
