Dealing with Challenging Students

it's very hard dealing with students who constantly are asking questions (not always relevant), or questioning your knowledge or material.
I feel that letting them have their moment in the spotlight helps… ask them to explain to the class what something means…

"please enlighten us… what does X mean?"

Hi Lyndi,
I really like the idea of the question bucket. I am sure the attention getting students take full advantage of the question bucket.

I allow my "attention getting students" to state their opinions and points but I do like to throw some questions back at them. Questions I know that they can answer but it will end the topic quickly. After they give me the answer back I use it to teach the class. I also use a question bucket. With my question bucket I allow students during my lecture to write down questions they may have, put it in the bucket and I answer them the next day.

This sounds like a great way to re-focus students desire to be a"have the last word" attention. I find that if I use this technique the either one, have a valid point, or it's the last time they interject with an dispurtion.
