You need to develop Relationships with the students
I find you need to develop relationships with your students. You need to find out what interest them, why they are taking your course, how they can apply the content to benifit themselves, get them excited about you and the course by learning what they are all about.
Hi Hortencia,
I work with a lot of students like yours at my institution. We must do our due diligence to keep these students motivated and encouraged. High risk students must be watched closely because all they are used to is not completing what they have started.

Our population of students are moderate to high risk for failure students. It is very important to develope a responsible relationship with these students to use as a tool for communicating with them the value of thier success. This is especialy true for students who have no one to "look up yoo"
I agree. Relationships are important, but boundaries are key. The foundation of the relationship should be strictly related to the classroom and their education.
They can tell you all about their problems, but your input as their should be related only to how it affects their ability to succeed in school.
As a career college instructor, a large part of our job is to model the professional behavior that we expect our students to show.
There is also a fine line. You shouuld always find out what motivates that student. Why are they here? Use those motivations to your advantage and constantly remind the student of why they are here.
You CAN become too involved in the student's lives or have the student's involved too much in yours. Becareful as this will always backfire on you.
Hi Rick,
Relationship building is important when it comes to a student/teacher relationship. Students feel more comfortable with an instructor when a relationship has been established.
