A difficult student

There will always be a class that has a student that needs extra attention, or adds a dynamic to the class that is a challenge. I will always try to talk to the student to find out what is going on in their personal life first, then try to ask them what they could do to try and change things for the better.

Hi Gail,
Our students need to know that we geniunely care about them as a person and their success.

When there may be outside issues going on that are the cause of a "difficult student" they may need the validation of just knowing that you care. Sometimes all it takes is one conversation.

Sometimes students behave this way because they feel they have no voice outside of the classroom. Perhaps more patience and tolerance is required from the instructor. I have also found that a brief conference away from earshot provides invaluable insight as to problems and/or situations that students are involved in, opening doors of opportunity for tutoring and other outside resource help to present themselves to these particular students.

Yes, he did show some improvement in the class. He is quite intelligent, therefore, it was a shame to see the lack of energy in the class!

Hi Aaron,
After this conversation, I am sure this student's behavior will change for the better. This student also knows now that you know his story, and you care. Caring for a student means a lot to a student.

I have a student that fits into this description. He is very intelligent but not very motivated. He will sit in class and not pay attention. He shows no interest and verbalizes it. Yet, he is always there on time and hasn't missed a day! After talking with him, I did find out that there were some personal problems going on. He appreciated the conversation and the interest!
