A guest speaker may talk about the same thing the instructor talks about ( such as professionalism,and how important it is in the work place), students hear this all the time and may not take it seriously anymore.When a guest speaker comes into speak about the real world,will say the same thing to the students,they will have a different out look because they will realize it is real.
I think by using a guest speaker,it will not only help a student that might be thinking about leaving the class, but also the students that are not taking the class seriously and may think the course is not important.If the speaker talks and relates to the students that knowing and having the information from the class is vital to the industry they are getting into,with out it, they may not be able to perform their job to the fullest, and will not make the money that they could.And will wind up not enjoying the feild that they chose.
I have utilized various guest speakers for the various courses that I teach. They have brought in a fresh look at what has been covered in the course. I have also had former students who have spoken in my classes and that has had an impact on my students to take to heart the guidance that I have given them to succeed. As well as their own stories to help motivate them.

Using guest speakers, especially if it is a former student, helps current students feel motivated. The guest speaker might even discuss some of the obstacles they faced during their studies, and how they overcame those. (I also discuss some of my own, when I was working towards my degrees.)
I always suggest to students that they keep in touch with their instructors and let them know what is going on, with some suggestions of how we can be of assistance to them.
