Shaming Students
One of the videos advocated shaming employees (in our case, students) to manipulate their behavior. This suggestion is reprehensible. I don't care if it brings about results; shaming another human being is never a good thing, period. The persons who should be ashamed are the lecturer in the video and the people at this institution who allowed this nonsense to be included in the curriculum.
I agree shaming a student is not the best approach with students.
Shaming a student is a never a good idea because it can cause the student to lose respect for the instructor. It also causes the students to become embrassed in front of their peers which can degrading.
I absolutely agree with you. This is a TERRIBLE idea. Sure, there are some cultures (such as the military) where that might be acceptable, but the goal in those cultures is one of obedience more than one of nurture and individual growth, which is what I strive for in the classroom.
While I agree that shaming a student rarely results in positive things in todays politically correct world. BUT, in some training environments(military, bikers, violent sports, ect..)shaming does work and even creates a positive bond of comradery (sorry for the spelling). BUT those groups of trainees are in most cases a tougher, sturdier group than most.
