Disruptive Students

Why do you think some instructors have challenges with certain students while other instructors have absolutely no problem at all with the same individuals?

Thank you, Patricia!

I try to exhibit/model a positive attitude on a daily basis. The encouragement is always needed---so thank you! :)

Hi Mark,
You have to always be in control of the class, otherwise students will take completely over.

When I first started teaching I allowed students to cross the line from healthly discussion to being rude. It happens swiftly sometimes and I was not skilled at shutting it down early. I have learned to set the boundaries early and not tolerate rude behavior. I focus on being the leader of the class and the other students appreciate it when I quickly respond to disruptive students.
Thank you for your input!

People respond differently to different people.... Students and non-students alike. It's a matter of figuring out how to make a connection with that particular student. It can be a different way for as many students are in the class!

Hi Sherrie,
I handle the disruptive student swiftly and quickly, and I simply let them know that I am not gooing to tolerate their foolishness.

I generally do well with the more disruptive students. My approach is to ask that student to write down any and all questions, and to add whether or not I was able to answer them adaquately. Days that they are doing this are days when they must write down their own questions, and meet with me for 5 minutes after class. It's someone like the "observer", in that there is no talking allowed from this person.

I agree, and maintaining consistency is key. Always keeping the same standards from day one helps ensure that the rules are always enforced, whether it be about uniforms, punctuality, etc.

Hi Dr. Makia,
Continue to be a super role model for our students.

Yes, you are correct. I am professional at all times and my students witness this on a weekly basis. I display the behavior I want them to portray---that's the plan! :-)

It works--for the most part!

Thanks for your response!

I agree with you. Regardless of how disrespectful they are, I would not sink to their level of behavior. If you treat them like responsible adults and hold them to adult standards, they will sometimes change their attitude and behavior.

I agree with you. Regrdless of how dispectful they are, I would not sink to their level of behavior. If you treat them like responsible adults and hold them to adult standards, they will sometimes change their attitude and behavior.

From my personal experience, I have a talk with disruptive students (from the beginning of the term). I let them know my expectations of them and ask them for their expectations of me. This way, we both have to hold up to the responsibilities we've set for each other.

I just don't tolerate rude students in my class. I provide alternative methods for them and normally, it works!

Often times, students have a problem with respecting me (particularly because I look fairly 'young'); however, I set the tone for the course and once this is done, I have no problems throughout the duration of the term.

I speak to students in a professional manner. Even if they are not speaking the same to me, I would normally refer to them by their last name and let know that we are professionals. I give them the opportunity to practice this in the class and it works (most of the time).

I find myself continuing to practice new methods---because every day is a new day!!!!
