I also try to have a meeting with difficult students. I have found that they will typically gain a little trust and start to step up their game in the classroom.

I usually try to develop a rapport with a challenging student. A meeting in private to discuss the class and problems they are having etc. Getting acquainted and showing that you care while not solving all the problems does male it easier for them to talk to you. This generation has unbelievable life problems to cope with that impact on their education. I find this is often the first step in turning around their behavior.
