What I think about when encountering a challenging student

First is, we are a career oriented school, the students come from a wide range of background. I remind my self to that I need to be more patient, have a big heart and that I need to put more efforts and time in for them, otherwise, they are easy to get slipped off the track.

What I really think and what I need to do are two seperate things for me. I can think what I want to (personal belief) but how I respond sometimes has to be different.

Hi ANTOINETTE,
Sometimes it is good to get feedback on students from other instructors to know how to better deal with students.

Kari, you do an excellent job of communicating with your challenging students. I've noticed that you also engage other instructors in helping you to assess the student and his or her needs. This is very important because it allows you to incorporate a perspective different from your own and to view the challenge from more than one angle. That way, you are more likely to hit upon a workable solution.

Challenging students have my attention they have one or more issue that holds them back, home being told they are dumb, or just feeling like they don't belong. I work with them and empower them to do their best and tell them how proud I am of their accomplishments no matter how small.

Hi Diane,
I like how you take responsibility with a challenging student. Don't beat yourself up. Sometimes it is not the instructor.

I try to determine why they seem challenging and how I can present information to engage them in class. My experience is that my presentation style and interaction with a challenging student can determine how they respond in the classroom.
