Dealing with difficult students
What is good follow up for students who always say they will do better but do not?
Hi Alethea,
You do a fine job dealing with difficult students. I can tell you really want your students to succeed.

When dealing with difficult students I will check in with them daily. I want to make sure they are on task and completely comprehend instructions. I will evaluate through out class students behavior and ask them at the end of class if they have any questions.
Hi Gordon,
At my institution we have an excellent seminar that teaches students test taking strategies.

While doing a grade review give advice on how to study also establish/refine were the bar is set. With some defining what their goals are or refining goals goes a long way and how the class fits into big picture of their goals.
Well it seems to me that pointing history out to the student will enlighten on this topic. Most students when shown past evedence will baulk to start with but will see the truth apone reflection.
Hi Lila,
Have them put it in writing what their goals are to do better and refer to this documentation throughout the grading period to remind what they have said. Let them even read the goals again.

When working with difficult students I have them closer to me. I also have weekly meetings with them if not daily, In are meeting we are discussing their behavior or progression in class.
