Having a former student come in to talk to current students is a great tool. This lets the stuedents see the reason why they are here. They can often lose focus of the primary goal. Having a succssful graduate come in and talk to them helps the discouraged students re-focus.
Listen! Listen! Listen! Show your concern. Lower your voice and repeat the student's concern or complaint back to them. In my experience the lower voice usually diffuses the angry student immediately.
Guest speakers provide a view to the outside world. They can motivate and inspire students with their real world experiences. Students can also become more aware of what their professional role will be in the community.
Guest speakers can be a very useful adjunct to the curriculum: they bring real-world answers and experiences to the student-it is no longer "just school theory."
Because they are real people already experienced in the field the student is looking to enter, they can give ralistic answers to the student's concerns and questions, which goes a long way in alleviating or easing the discouraged student.
A Guest speaker add tremendous value to a course because it allows student the chance to see someone who is experience on the topic that you are teaching that day

Having a guest speaker helps reinformce what you are teaching. Typically you, as the instructor, will have plenty of experience in the field and bring this into the classroom. The problem is sometimes the students see us as just a teacher, so sometimes I think they start to think is this really what teh real world will be like. When a guest speaker comes in it shows the student what really is expected and wanted out of an employee. Guest speakers are great I have used them in many of my classes and the students have had a wonderful response to them so far.

The guest speaker often times has the ability to keep the student focused and on track by sharing their personal experiences with the subject matter.
i have personally experienced guest speakers who have enlightened the subject and encouraged me to be a success. i feel guest speakers make a difference and give positive outlook on success.
I assigned a great book to the class, yet they didn't want to read it. I asked several of my former students to come in and talk to my class. I invited an A student, a soccer player, and "everyone's friend." After hearing from these students, my class began the book and really enjoyed it.
A guest speaker can help the student see that what they are learning is relevant and has meaning for their future. While I have not yet included a guest speaker in my class, I think I will probably add that next term.
The value of having a guest speaker to talk with students who are discouraged and about to quit is to show the students that someone like them (meaning a former student at the college) made it through the course they are taking, made it through all the college courses, made it through personal difficulties, and made it to his/her career. The value is to inspire the students to continue on and to let them know that they can succeed.
