I love inviting guest speakers to class. The end result are motivated students who can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Guest speakers have walked the same or similar journey and can provide useful strategies when students are at wits end. Oftentimes, showing students the end product of hard work is all it takes to propel them to stay on course.
I have used guest speakers in the past and it really seems to "wake-up" the students. It was fun, as the instructor, to witness this. I was able to have professionals from different settings come speak, and this allowed the students to see endless opportunities.
Hi Brandie,
Guest speakers are exciting, and it is good for students to hear from professionals that are actually doing what they will be doing. Students need to hear from others other than the instructor all the time. Guest speakers can really validate what instructors have taught students.

I think it gets students excited about there career.
After you find some great guest speakers keep them in the loop! It is an excellent resource for motivation!
The value that a guest speaker bring to the student, it ler the know that if this person could do it so can I. It gives them encouragement to continue the the education endeavors.
The guest speaker can show the student what the future holds by accomplishing their goals of completing college and starting a careet.
I've had great success using guest speakers. I utilize either recent graduates from the school or former students of mine who may have a special or unique story to tell.
Students can identify with these students and I feel it has great impact! Having an example of a successful student is very inspiring and motivating.

The value is in showing students who are discouraged the proverbial "light at the end of the tunnel". It helps them to actually be able to send the end result of all of their hard work. Also, as the instructor, it helps to reinforce all of the things that you have been telling them in class. Many times my students have felt like I was out of touch with the "real" world when it came to things that I was telling them. They felt like I didn't have a grasp of what was really happening in the field, but when a guest speaker has come in and told them the exact same things that I have told them, you could see an almost instantaneous turnaround in their attitudes.
Hi Tamikah,
I concur! Students are really rejuvenated after hearing a guest speaker.

My guest speaker is extremely effective in motivating my students as she puts herself through undergraduate and professional school and totally empathizes with my working students. She keeps them focused on working hard throughout obstacles.
Hi Elizabeth,
Graduate guest speakers are the best. They bring book theory to real life. Current students can really relate to graduate guest speakers.

The guest speaker can give students insight about the field they are about to enter. He or she can discuss any difficulties or challenges they faced during their time in school and how they dealt with the pressures of life and attending an academic program. We had a guest speaker that was a graduate of the school and the students asked many questions and were able to relate well with this guest.
Hi Mary,
I firmly believe that most guest speakers bring book theory to real life for our students.
