Difficult students going to wrong person
I have heard of many students going to the program director instead of the instructor to complain about an assignment or issues they are having in the class. Is the a way to prevent this from happening from the start?
I have had this problem as I took over for another instructor in the middle of a course and the students went to everyone else but me for help it seemed in the beginning. I had a hard time correcting this at first but after awhile when I kept stressing to my students they need to come see me about any questions they may have and I will guide them to the best of my abilities because that's why I am here. I try to stay open and give time during break or after class to talk with anyone. I think your always going to have students who go to another instructor and that's fine so log as you are being respected and kept in the loop so you can keep control of what's going on with your class and you can address their concerns with them.
As a new instructor to Carrington ,I have had several incidents of students going to other instructors with issues instead of coming to me. The other instructor then asks me what the issue is and I may not even know there was a problem .I have had them even text the other instructor during my class. As I took over for this instructor in the middle of a module, I know they are maybe more comfortable with the previous instructor and may not be comfortable with me yet, but what can I do to encourage the students to come to me??
Hi Megan,
Whenever a student comes to me as the DOE before going to the instructor, I direct them back to the instructor, and I do follow up. I try to teach the student professional protocol. You always go to the person you have the concern/isssue with and try to resolve things, and if things do not get resolve then you move up the chain of command. Instructors should let their students know on Day 1 if there is ever a problem get with he/she first before going to their supervisor.
