Difficult Students

In my past experience I have had students that are difficult and over react to everything in the classroom setting. I can remember when one student would throw things on the floor, pout, and begin to cry when they made a bad grade on a simulation. It seemed when you gave her attention there was more that she would do to create chaos. One day I just ignored what she did so she stormed out of the class. She did this a couple of times and she just stopped doing it after the second time I ignored it. Everytime she would leave I would tell her I will see you tomorrow. I hope things are better for you. What other suggestions would you have had in this situation.
Thanks.

Hi Frank,
Exactly! Even students will play on your weakness. Handle them firmly and according to rules.

I agree! I have found that the best way to deal with the overly dramatic student is to not engage and avoid escalating the situation. In other words, don't fall into the trap of letting them push your emotional buttons. Keep emotions out of the equation and stick to policy to effectively handle this type of student.

This situation sounds like one we deal with on a daily basis, especially in a career college environment. Situations like this often mean sticking to the rules set by the individual institution and making sure the student is aware that there is a policy in place for such actions.
