Students who come to class but do no homework
This seems to be a problem with a few students in all of my courses. Even the fire and brimstone fear of failure speech does not motivate them. Any suggestions for tackling this problem?
I have the same frustrating problem with students who come to class, but waste the entire class doing anything but their work, then show up on the due date with a project that is just fine.
I started requiring progress work each week that is graded for points. That way, an "A" quality project loses points when I see no progress for four weeks and then they pull an all-nighter to finish it.
It also helps the students who are really putting in the work (and growing in skills), but are maybe not as naturally talented to be rewarded for that work.
