Make sure students are held accountable for their actions. Remind students of academic integrity.

having plenty of room around each student helps prevent the wandering eyes. We also have a policy of no phones but the IPAD can quickly provide the answer with a quick swipe. We try to have all " breadcrumbs" removed but this is a constant problem requiring vigilance.

I had a group of four students who had a habit of rotating their absents from class so they could take the the test the follow week as a make-up. It self corrected when I had diffrent versions of the test. Not only was the questions scrembled there were diffrent question altogether.

I have the students set there phones on vibrate and then place them on a table in front of the class in plain view. They have access to them after the test.

I walk around periodically.

Before I hand out the test, I remind them of the rules. I might say something like "This is Open book, but NOT Open Google" to remind them not to use their cell phones.

I explain what happens if they're found cheating and I spread them far away from each other so that they're not tempted.

I have, unfortunately, been presented with a student cheating in my class this term. The other students are the ones that brought this to my attention. I now have all books and cell phones on the floor and out of reach during tests and now I must monitor students during tests at all times by walking around or standing at the back of the room. It is very heart breaking to think that adults feel the need to cheat, which is only a reflection on that person and their ethics. The same student is now asking why he is failing the class and how he can bring his grade up. Finals are in two days. The same student arrives late to class, disrupts the class and then involves others in his disruptions. He has been spoken to by the program director this term and last term for being disrespectful to another instructor. There is a part of me that feels sorry for him.

Hi Suzanne,
Great tactics to reduce cheating.

When I give an exam I create 4 versions of the exam. I also walk around the classroom so that the students know that I am watching them.

I use different tests so that student A and B will not necessarily have the same test. it makes it more difficult to cheat on these types of tests. I also make sure I go over what will happen if someone is found to be cheating.

Hello Class:

It is good to let the students know the value of education and cheating does not help at long run. Knowledge is very important. Also to set the exams rule by not letting students have books on the table, use a cell phone or other materials.

Explain to the class that cheating on a test you are only cheating yourself. If they are having trouble will the course ,they should ask for help.this would reduce cheating.

I like stand behind the class while the test is going on. I tell students that if the leave the room to either hand over there phone or there test.

Hi Betsy,
Monitoring the room while students are testing is a good way to reduce cheating. Students are more likely not to cheat if they know that they are being watched.

I make sure that VARK methods are used for teaching and handouts so the students can have every opportunity to learn the material. During tests I have them put everything under the desk and wander throughout the room.

Mutiple test versions and classroom walk arounds

multiple versions of a test or adding some helpful additional information is a great way to limit repeated course work.

I do the same. Students know that my eyes are watching and I'm listening for clues that let me know that the student is struggling or that the student may be cheating. Once, I have made my way around the testing site, students will work independently, without cheating from their fellow classmates.

I have multiple copies of the same test, I constantly walk around the room

I will walk around the class while the students are taking the test as well as give out multiple versions of the test.
