Maintaining the Upperhand
I find that if from day one in class you have not maintained order, respect, and set the ground rules, then students will find a way to manipulate you up until the last day of class. You have to develop a "tight as a drum" method for having the students act and perform like professionals. It is hard for instructors and sharing your techniques would be helpful.
Clear expectations are key. I'm a young female teacher, so they usually try to push me around a little the first few classes, but I've found that if I stand my ground, they figure out that I mean what I say.
I'm a stickler in my classes with early leaves, late assignments, etc. I'm afraid it causes me to be unapproachable though. Employers aren't going to let them leave early and may fire them when project deadlines are missed. I press upon that and it goes in one ear and out the other.
Hi Justin,
What kind of things you do to make you a lenient instructor? I am a stickler for professionalism across the board, such as dress, deadlines, punctuality, grades, etc.
Patricia
I let the students know that I am lenient but I expect them to respect me and the class. I make sure they understand that I am not only teaching them Graphic Design but also how to operate in the work environment, and being professional is a big part of becoming a respected individual in their field.
Hi Annie,
Yes! You have it! You have mentioned the happy median. I practice this as well.
Patricia
I like the students to know I am the authority, but not come off as not approachable but also not a push over.
Hi Chris,
You're right! The instructor must always be in full control at all times.
Patricia
You can start off strong and soften later in the course but it is impossible to start of weak and try to become strong.
I agree you must present yourself as an authority in the classroom. You set the tone form the beginning with your actions as well as the syllabus and you must remain consistent.
