Student who does not know when to stop talking...

I have a student who does not know when to stop explaining her question or adding a story. I want the students to be able to talk but she is becoming too much. Any ideas of a polite way I could gain control.

Hi Paul,
It seemed like you solved the problem. Some students are great talkers, but as you have done we can not let them take over the class.
Patricia

This was an extreme case, but one student stands out to me. She would interrupt and add stories...you know the kind. Eventually the class could sense her slowing them down. I can't have that, so I told her this during the class. "I know you have great stories, comments and questions. I want to hear every one of them and talk with you after class about anything you would like. Write down every single thing you would like to discuss and show it to me after class and we'll have a discussion about everything on that paper. It will be great for your notebook that will be handed in at the end of the class." If she had tried to interject something other than a quick comment, I would simply scribble in the air. She got the hint and I never got a list at the end of class.

I have a student that right after the lecture starts to talk to every student in the class about her personel problems, especially the problems that she is having with her childrens father. She also talks about her prefence for "gangster" boyfriends. I have pointed out that people are nt interested in hearing her, but in one ear and out the other.
She is a needy student and has to heard by someone, and class seems to be her venting session, although she is very nice about it.

Hi Jessica,
Have a private conversation with the student. Express you really and truly appreciate her participation, but she has to know when to stop so that others will have a turn.
