Cheating
What is the best way to approach someone you suspect is cheating? Do you take a direct approach at the moment you suspect them of the cheating or a more subtle approach after class ends or before a class starts?
I go by the policy to take the student aside and discuss the matter in private. Just as a students academic information is private, so is there performance or lack there of. The student is probably going to be embarrassed with being caught, I don't want to add to that embarrassment and lose an opportunity to positively influence them.
I try to cut this off before they have a chance. I hand out different versions of the exam. This eliminates the abilty to cheat.
Hi Dwayne,
As soon as it happens, deal with it in a very tactful, professional, private way.

Hi Edith,
When cheating takes place it is definitely best to handle this type of situation privately.

I make my presence known while they are taking the test but choose to discuss the problem one-on-one with the person after class. Their body language at that time may tell more than their words. I also explain to students that if it LOOKS like they're cheating that I have few options and that they need to protect themselves from putting themselves in that situation.
