Cheating

In most cases, I think students cheat because of the lack of preparation.

Lack of preparation is one of the main causes. To deal with it I offer some assignments that involve work with book and additional course materials. Working this way the students are expected to go deep into the class materials and I try to kill two birds with one stone: make them read the book if they haven't and do the assignmemnt that couldn't be copied from other students

I think most students cheat because they think
they can get away with it. I usually give 2 forms of the exam to decrease the chance of cheating.

Yes, but it also has a lot to do with having the OPPORTUNITY to cheat. A student who is unprepared but knows that they cannot get away with cheating of any kind, will eventually accept that they were not prepared, take the poor grade, and hopefully learn to be better prepared for the next test. It is the responsibility of the teacher to take every measure to eliminate the opportunity for a student to cheat.
