Managing student behavior

Managing student behavior is challenging every semester. First, to set the boundries between instructor and student. What is appropriate professional behavior whether it be communicated verbally, nonverbally, or in written format. When the boundries and rules are set on day number one with specific consequences then managing behavior is a small event.

Being specific about expectations on day one will help to avoid difficulties throughout the term. Holding students accountable for their actions in regards to meeting those expectations will be an ongoing process each class day.

Hi Katherine,
In the real world rules, policies, and procedures will be enforced. We have to let our students know at the very beginning that we are a stickler for rules. Rules are in place to be adhered to.

Yes, I believe that rules need to be explained on day 1 so that the students understand expectations and consequences of professional behavior. In the clinical nursing setting, the first thing that is discussed is tardiness, sick days and what a student nurse can or can not do in the clinical setting.

Hi Katherine,
A strong presence has to be made on Day 1, and rules must be established and explained to students.
