Cheating can be avoided by by strict instructions,by placing the students far from each other and also by changing set of questions.
We had students tell the instructors that there were a few students cheating on the exams. The instructors now make all students clear their desk and put all belongings either to the front or back of the room. We do not even let them have their belongings next to their desk. This has seemed to help.

I think that tactics to combat chesting have to be changed often as well as having the normal testing procedures in place, i.e., placing students at a distance from each other, no cell phones during exams, no diving into bookbags, backpacks etc. I have also utilized the "clean desk" philosophy where students are only permitted to have pencils and the exam booklet on the table during the exam. This helped a lot and I was impressed.

If they are not cheating trust should not matter. Let your students know on Day 1 that during test time no cell phones are allowed to be out and let them know the repercussion if they choose to have them out.

we have a problem at our school of students using phones to take pics of tests/questions and send to others. i sit in the back of the class and tell them as they begin to take the test that they are not allowed to touch anything other than their computers while any student is taking the test. this has been very effective but has also made some students feel as if i don't trust them.

I also make them clear off their desk and I also run multiple copies of my exams and scramble the questions and answers on the seperate versions and then I put different colored cover sheets with each version.

In my line of work welding, cheating is the fastest way to fail. We have specific guidlines to make a proper weld.
I have to remind my students that if they cheat they are cheating them selves!!
Because on a weld test you have only on shot to produce a weld within the applied code.
It is pass or fail that simple in a real world.
I encourage them while there @ school to learn from there mistakes and try to fix them.

This can create more work for the instructor. I have them clear off desks completely, and space themselves. Were I run into trouble is if a student saves work to the computer or their flash drive.
