Hello Charles,
When I first started teaching, I would sugar coat things to the students. Now, I shoot straight from the hip with my students. I now tell new instructors to be straightforward with their students from the very beginning because in the real world nothing is sugar coated.
Patricia
Describe how you have avoided and helped others avoid that same mistake.
My biggest classroom mistake was assuming the students understood the material and moving into the next areas before they actually did. EOC feedback helped me identify the issue, reading what students felt about the material hit home. Lower test scores than usual also helped me identify the problem areas. I assisted others by tutoring the students from all classes.
Hi Ricky,
Absolutely, you should learn from any mistake. Keep working at being the best that you can be.
Patricia
Hi Peter,
I am sure you have learned consistency is key whenever you are an educator. The students should never have to question what to expect from you. Your reputation should speak for itself.
Patricia
Setting basic guidelines, and then sticking to those guidelines
Not giving credit to a student at the time that he achieves that credit point. Later on if you make that mistake you should learn from that mistake.
One of my early faults was to not be consistant with the students. The students didn't know what to expect from me as the leader, and that led to problems later in the phase-as others have said before.Start out firm-but be consistant. The students generally rise to your expectations.
Hello Andrew,
You do not have to bully students. Simply take control, and they will know who has ALL the authority.
Patricia
Hi Jeff,
Remember, it is best to from a generic-based approach versus a specific-based approach.
Patricia
Directly challenging a student to be defient.
Dont do this ever, It only shows the class that you are not in control and want to be a bully not a teacher.
A lot of my early field experiance was with VW and Audi. so I would at times talk about diag. problems with that car or model mentioned. If someone in the class did not like that Vehicle I would loose their attention. I have tried to make all experiance and problems Generic.
Hi William,
It is very important for your students to respect you. Respect goes a long way. It is better to start off too firm and then ease up versus the other way around.
Patricia
Hi Steve,
I really try to point out "um" to my students. Generally, when um is used one is trying to gather their thoughts. I tell my students to think and then speak.
Patricia
When i first started teaching I was to firm with the students and received alot of resistance from them. I had to give in a little to them and now I receive more out of the students especially wirh respect
Hi C.C.
As educators, we make mistakes because we are human. Simply, learn from your mistakes and move forward. Don't beat yourself up. I am sure this was not the first mistake, and it will not be your last. Continue to do your best!
Patricia
Hi David,
At this level, you still have students that depend solely on you in every way. Take them under your wing and guide them.
Patricia
Hi James,
Humor in the classroom can be a good thing and in some cases it can be a bad thing. I generally do not use a whole lot of humor in my class, but some instructors do.
Patricia
The big one for me was forgeting to give an assignment to the class then finding out at the end of the class I was short one assignment. The way I learned was to double check all my required assignments and lab sheets and not to make that mistake again.
In My public speeking I used the word UM too much.
My mentor saw this problem that I was using this word to help gather my thoughs and now I Have adjusted and working much better.
