Common Instructor mistakes

Not doing proper class preparation is a common mistake made. Students can quickly tell that the instructor is not prepared. You need to own up to your mistakes and then move on. Students will respect you for this.

Hi Melissa,
I too like to be challenged. You're right, we don't know all the answers, but we can utilize resources to find them. Nicely responded to.
Patricia

I like to commend students who make me think. I feel that I should be challenged as well. I tell my students that I don't have all the answers, the important thing is that I know where to FIND the answers, if they ask a question I don't know the answer to, I challenge all of us to go out and find the answer, then we can come back and see what we all came up with. It is learning for all of us.

Hello Mark,
Nicely said! No one knows it all, and it is important that students get the correct information.
Patricia

I always allow the students to question any statement I make as long as they do it respectfully. I am the SME but I let them know that I do not know everything. I tell them that it is more important to me that they get the correct information and not that I am right all the time.

Hi James,
Students are very observant, they do quickly realize when you are unprepared. Unpreparedness is one of the quickest ways to lose respect, and once you have lost respect, it is extremely hard to regain it.
