Explian Respect to students
I find it helpful to let the students know that respect is not something that is just given that it is something that is earned meaning that your must be respectful in order to be respected.
When I introduce myself to a class I usually let all the students know that I respect them for making the decision and sacrifices to continue their education and better themselves. This often surprises sine students because they are used to having instructors be condescending. By showing respect first, most often there is immediate reciprocity.
Hi Daniel,
I've always had the belief that an instructor should respect all students because the instructor wants all students to respect he or she. I've never had a problem about receiving respect from students because I give them respect.
Patricia
I have heard so many students say if you dont respect them, they will not respect you. They can take something the wrong way from a fellow student and take it as disrespect, and cause a major problem in the classroom. I think the kids/young adults of today need a little education on respect and what it means to give it and receive it. It is not an all or nothing issue as so many have reflected it to be.
Hello Joseph,
Generally, if you respect students, they will respect you. In my opinion, if you conduct yourself in a professional, mannerly way, you will gain the respect of others quickly. Your deameanor, attitude, personality, etc. have a lot to do as to how people respect you.

I've actually never believed in the statement, that respect is not given and must be earned. I have a base respect for all people when meeting them for the first time, and expect the same of them. That respect can then be bolstered or lost, depending on what happens next.
If lost, respect is very hard to regain - it requires damage control to get it back. I try to make sure everything I do is worthy of their respect, and avoid anything that would cause them to lose it.
Hi Joshula,
You're right, sometimes you do have to take the time to explain respect to students. We are more than just educators in the classroom, sometimes we play parental roles as well.
Patricia
You do have to explain respect to students sometimes. When students talk out of turn, not listening to anothers viewpoint. I often say that, inturrupting another while talking is not showing respect. Some students get it, others srug it off. A lot of learning, or not, about respect comes from TV, not showing it, people talking over one another, being rude, these are things that I learned at home, but alas, no more.

Hello Bryan,
How do you go about explaining respect to students?

think that we are on the same page
Hello Trevor,
Wow, I tell my student the same thing. Isn't it amazing respect is not demanded, it has to be earned. I have always given my students the utmost respect, and I get the utmost respect from my students.
