I make a big point of learning student's names. I challenge myself by going around the room and naming each student as I go around the room. I often tell the students that If I don't know all their names by the end of the week I owe them candy or something, it turns into a humerous and fun exercise in getting to know the students.

Hi Julie,
It is important to make the effort to memorize students names. Students want to be known.
Patricia

Hi Beth,
Keep trying! Name tents work well.
Patricia

I also introduce myself first. I use the information they give me to remember their name by association. I also make a chart of where they seat themselves, and memorize it. I'm thankful I have a smaller class than some of the other instructors!

Hi Paul,
This strategy still works today. Students should and need to feel a sense of importance.
Patricia

assign students seating and make a chart with their names on it, easy to focuse on the classwork a makes everyone feel important.

assign students seats in class and make a name chart this way you can learn their names faster and associate the face with a name.

This is a tough one for me because I will oftentimes have 120 new students at a time! I do my best and try to create shortcuts for remembering names. I need to continue working on this one and do realize the importance of getting this done right away.

Hi Michael,
What a challenge! Continue to try.

Each course is 3 weeks long with 30 students, then you have a second shift of the same. you will be lucky to know half by the end.

Hi Russell,
Nicely stated! There are many good reasons to learn students names, and you mentioned some very good reasons.
Patricia

Tihs is one of the best tools to show the student that I care about them and their education. They under stand that they are not just a number, but a preson. Students respond better when asked questions that are directed at them by name.

Hi Amber,
I am sure you can attest, name tents are very helpful.
Patricia

Hi Robert,
Knowing that you have a problem with remembering names, what type of strategies have you utilized to try to become better in this area?
Patricia

I too have problems remembering names. I am up front with my students about this. I just tell them it's a mental thing and not to be hurt by it. I also tell them that while I might forget their name I will always remember their face.

Great idea - I have several new students this quarter and had forgotten about name tents. I will try that next time. Thanks

Hi Sarah,
This exercise is mutlipurpose. You get so much from this one exercise. Thanks for sharing.
Patricia

Hi Laura,
Phonetically spell out the students names.
Patricia

Hello Sarah,
You're super! You are putting yourself in the students shoes. What a great role model.
Patricia

ASk them again how to say thier name. Repeat until you have it right and phonetically spell it out for yourself so you are correct on the next go. When I get a students name wrong. I apologize and them tell them they can call me Anderson instead of Henderson. They will do it too and it does two things for me. 1. Helps me keep me in check of how awful it feels to be called by the wrong name and 2. a reminder to call them by the right name.
