Learning Students names
By learning the nammes as quickly as possible, they will feel at home in your class
Hi Norma,
Absolutely, at some point students will run out of patience with you due to not knowing their name.
Patricia
I agree, if the students feel you cant remember their name in the first few days of class, then how can you gain the class respect as an instructor that is on top of things.
Hi Laura,
Students seem to be so much more pleasant/receptive whenever you call them by their name.
Patricia
Hi Karla,
I do the same thing! You make students feel EXTRA special whenever you know their name, especially if you memorize their name on the first day.
Patricia
I have found it also helps motivate them to read the text as you can call on them during lecture.
On my first day I try to memorize every on my student's names. It is very important, they feel that you are interested in getting to know them and become more comfortable in your class. It seems that I also eliminate a lot of behavior issues.
Hi John,
Try name tents. They are very effective.
Patricia
i agree that knowing the students names would be grate but your classes are 3 week long with 30 student though i have tried seating charts with some success i have a hard time with names.
Hi Mary,
What a good tactic to use. I like how you add additional information to the seating chart.
Patricia
I make a seating chart on the first day. When I ask the students to stand and tell the class a little about themselves, I put their name on the chart and anything else that may be important for me to know about them. It makes my students and me feel comfortable when I call them by name. I have over 20 students and after a few days, I know their names.
Hi Gloria,
You've scored big!!! What a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
Patricia
I have developed a "name game" to teach students
the terms "mnemonic device","alliteration" and "adjective" and most importantly the skill of listening. We go around the room with each one giving an adjective that begins with the letter of their first name. The second person says the first person's name and then their name; the 3rd person says the first one, the second one and then their name and so on. The students are encouraged to connect a face with the name and not to take any notes but to focus on listening.
It works for me--even with a class of up to 30!
Our classes are 3 weeks long, and unless the student is in another class that you teach sometimes the name does not stick. The seating charts help, sometimes the student makes a effort to come into the class early and these seem to me to be the easier to remember.
I can usually learn their names in 8 days. I do this by constantly handing out grades and assignments
Hi Ellen,
I know you impress your students by doing this, and you are nice you reward them as well!
Patricia
HI Chris,
It will. I always use a mental map. It is an effective tool.
Patricia
Hi Sandra,
Challenge yourself every grading period to learn your students name in a less period of time. Take small increments, such as next grading period try to learn the names within 13 days, then 12 days, then 11 days, etc.
Patricia
I like that idea, association.....
I usually can remember the name of my students by the end of their second week in class. I use name cards. We also have exams everyday and by handing out their grades I get to know their names.
Paul,
As I was reading through possible solutions to this, I was thinking the same as you. Gaining a mental map of where each name is located would definitely help me learn names faster.

Christopher
