Common Instructor mistakes........

Ok, I made the mistake of giving my cell number to the class. Hmmmmm.

What about laptop/notebook computers? Some students (a very few!) actually take notes using their computers while others just "surf the internet" doing things totally unrelated to the course material. I have tried (with no success thus far) to get our school to give instructors the ability to disable wireless connections for the duration of each class but I guess that isn't very easy to do -- technically. And, if I require that every student turn off his/her computer I then punish the few who can actually take meaningful notes while still listening to the lecture content. Hmmmm -- no immediate solution to this predicament. Any thoughts?

Hi Erie,
I love it! What a great way to monitor the constant disruption of cell phones!
Patricia

Our school does not allow cell phones in the building. Students who wish to talk on their phones must go outside the building so as not to disturb anyone. Teachers confiscate any cell phone that goes off in the classroom. These phones are held until the class is over and then the student is counselled

Hi Shantelle,
Your academic dean should make sure you have a work phone.
Patricia

I have too...I don't have a work phone and had a couple instances where a student had an emergency and needed to contact me. I was lucky that my phone didn't "blow up" with calls by my student, but what is another way to get emergency contact info, if not a phone number?

Hi Edward,
I feel as though educational institutions should have a policy of no phones on in the classrooms or labs. Cell phones are a huge disruption to the educational atmosphere.
Patricia

Gave a customer my home phone number once.Never got a free weekend after that from "Can you help?" with this, that and everything else until I changed to a new number. We have a policy of no phones in the classroom or labs which is the way it should be for a good learning environment. To extend an offer of communication during off hours to todays 24/7 student populaces born with cellphones for ears borders on insanity. Even though I inherited a large volume of stock in AT&T and am benefiting from it immensely,I also believe the tremendous recent increase in microwave emissions from sattelite communications is contributing more to global warming than all the greenhouse gasses from vehichle emissions and bovine flatulance combined. Veegans and Tree Huggers UNITE! Put down your cells ,turn off your PCs and plasma screens, ride a bike or walk don't run to the nearest defunct 50's bomb shelter,oh wait, the R12 fueled AC system probably is inop anyway. Does blood boil at 212 degrees F ? Bottom line, don't get fooled again, never give personal CONTACT info to students/customers,when you come out of the other end of that wormhole, you're gonna BURN!
